There’s one question we hear at Independent Rental Co. that still surprises us:
“Wait…you’re open on Sunday?”
Yes!
In fact, Independent Rental Co. has always been open on Sundays. Our regular weekend hours are Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM–12 PM, and depending on the reservation, customers may also be able to arrange an 8:30 AM pickup.
We’ve been renting trucks and vans in Santa Cruz since 2005, yet somehow the idea that we’re closed on Sundays has persisted.
So we thought it was time to clear that up—and explain why Sunday truck rental can actually be a useful way to plan a weekend project.
Friday or Saturday Already Booked? Consider Sunday.
Weekends are popular rental days, particularly for moving trucks, dump trucks and some of the other vehicles in our fleet.
Sometimes a customer calls looking for a particular truck on Friday or Saturday and discovers that it’s already reserved.
Before assuming the project has to be postponed, ask us about Sunday.
Depending on what you’re doing, the vehicle you need and its availability, shifting your rental by a day can sometimes make the project work.
Sunday can also be useful when you’d rather spend the day working at your own pace instead of trying to pick up a truck, complete the entire project and return it all within a busy Saturday schedule.
🌿 A Sunday Dump Truck Rental Can Work Particularly Well
Here’s a good example of how a Sunday rental can help.
Suppose you’re cleaning up a Santa Cruz yard. You have tree branches, leaves, brush or other material that needs to be loaded into a dump truck and taken to the City of Santa Cruz Resource Recovery Facility (“the dump”) on Dimeo Lane.
The dump is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 AM–3:30 PM, so you can’t make the actual dump run there on Sunday.
But that doesn’t mean Sunday is useless.
Instead, you can pick up the dump truck Sunday morning and spend Sunday cutting, cleaning and loading the truck. Then on Monday morning, head to the dump first thing, unload, refuel the truck and return it to us.
For some projects, that can actually be a pretty convenient schedule.
You get Sunday to concentrate on the work itself without having to stop midway through the project because you’re watching the clock for the dump.
A Couple of Local Dump-Run Tips
If you’ve made enough trips to the dump on Dimeo Lane, you learn a few things.
For an early trip, you can arrive before the 7:30 AM opening and get in line so you’re ready when they open.
At the other end of the day, we recommend planning to be in line at least 10–15 minutes before the 3:30 PM closing time rather than cutting it too close.
And don’t forget about your load.
Make sure it is properly covered before you head to the dump. An uncovered or improperly secured load can create problems before you ever get to unload.
A few minutes spent securing everything before you leave can save you a much bigger headache later.
🚚 Sunday Rentals Aren’t Just for Dump Runs
Of course, the same idea can apply to many other projects.
Maybe you’re moving furniture between homes in Santa Cruz County. Perhaps you’re clearing out a storage unit, picking up equipment, working on a landscaping project or preparing for a Monday delivery.
Depending on availability, you might use:
🚐 Cargo vans for smaller moves, deliveries and enclosed cargo
🚛 Box trucks for household or business moves
🛻 Pickups and flatbeds for materials and equipment
🌿 Dump trucks for cleanup and hauling projects
❄️ Refrigerated vehicles for temperature-sensitive loads
The important part is that you don’t necessarily need to know which vehicle you need before you call us.

If Friday or Saturday is your first choice, it’s always a good idea to reserve ahead when you can.
But if the vehicle you want isn’t available—or your schedule changes—don’t forget about Sunday.

Sometimes changing the schedule by one day is all it takes to turn “there aren’t any trucks available” into a workable plan.
