Yes, We Repair Cars Too! Independent Auto & Truck Repair in Santa Cruz

When people hear the name Independent Service Company, they often think of trucks, diesel engines and commercial vehicles.

And they’re right! Truck repair is a big part of what we do.

But here’s something we want more Santa Cruz drivers to know:

Yes, you can bring us your car, too!

Whether you drive a personal vehicle, pickup, cargo van, work truck or commercial box truck, our experienced technicians provide a wide range of maintenance and repair services right here on the Westside of Santa Cruz.

More Than a Truck Repair Shop

We work on a variety of gas and diesel vehicles, from everyday passenger cars to commercial trucks.

You don’t need to own a business or operate a fleet to bring your vehicle to Independent Service Company.

Maybe your car needs brakes. Perhaps your pickup has developed an unusual noise, your check engine light came on, or your van isn’t running quite right.

Those are the kinds of problems we help customers with every day.

Our shop handles a variety of services, including:

  • Routine maintenance: Oil changes, inspections and other scheduled maintenance
  • Brake repairs: Diagnosing and repairing worn or malfunctioning braking systems
  • Steering and suspension: Investigating unusual noises, handling problems and worn components
  • Cooling systems: Diagnosing overheating, coolant leaks and cooling-system concerns
  • Electrical problems: Troubleshooting electrical faults and related vehicle systems
  • Check engine lights: Diagnosing warning lights and the underlying problems that trigger them
  • Gas and diesel engine concerns: Diagnosing performance and drivability problems

Whether your vehicle is used for work, family transportation or both, keeping it dependable matters.

Experienced Mechanics Who Know Older Vehicles

One thing that sets our shop apart is the range of experience our technicians bring to the job.

Today’s vehicles rely heavily on computers, electronic modules and sophisticated diagnostic systems. But our technicians also have experience that reaches back to a time when vehicle systems were considerably less computerized.

That combination can be valuable, especially when working on vehicles that have been on the road for many years.

We welcome vehicles from model year 2000 and newer.

Have something older?

Don’t automatically rule us out.

We consider pre-2000 vehicles on a case-by-case basis, depending on the type of vehicle, the repair needed, parts availability and whether the work is appropriate for our shop.

Give us a call and tell us what you’re driving and what needs attention. We’ll let you know whether it’s something we may be able to help with.

From Passenger Cars to Commercial Work Trucks

Our customers have different transportation needs.

For some, their vehicle is how they get to work, take the kids to school or handle everyday errands.

For others, a truck or van is an essential part of running a business.

At Independent Service Company, we understand both.

We service personal cars and pickups as well as commercial vehicles, including cargo vans, box trucks and medium-duty trucks.

Our experience with commercial gas and diesel vehicles is an important part of the shop, but you don’t need to drive a commercial truck to benefit from our technicians’ experience.

If you’re looking for a mechanic to help maintain your everyday vehicle, we’d like you to know we’re here.

Why Choose an Independent Mechanic in Santa Cruz?

Finding a repair shop you feel comfortable calling is important.

Sometimes you know exactly what your vehicle needs. Other times, all you know is that something doesn’t sound, feel or operate the way it should.

An independent repair shop gives you an opportunity to explain what’s happening with your vehicle and discuss the next steps with the people handling your service.

Our goal is to understand the concern, determine the appropriate diagnostic or repair approach and help you make informed decisions about your vehicle.

Whether it’s a routine maintenance visit or a problem that needs investigation, we’re happy to discuss what you’re experiencing.

Weekend Truck Rentals in Santa Cruz: Yes, We’re Open Sundays!

There’s one question we hear at Independent Rental Co. that still surprises us:

“Wait…you’re open on Sunday?”

Yes!

In fact, Independent Rental Co. has always been open on Sundays. Our regular weekend hours are Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM–12 PM, and depending on the reservation, customers may also be able to arrange an 8:30 AM pickup.

We’ve been renting trucks and vans in Santa Cruz since 2005, yet somehow the idea that we’re closed on Sundays has persisted.

So we thought it was time to clear that up—and explain why Sunday truck rental can actually be a useful way to plan a weekend project.

Friday or Saturday Already Booked? Consider Sunday.

Weekends are popular rental days, particularly for moving trucks, dump trucks and some of the other vehicles in our fleet.

Sometimes a customer calls looking for a particular truck on Friday or Saturday and discovers that it’s already reserved.

Before assuming the project has to be postponed, ask us about Sunday.

Depending on what you’re doing, the vehicle you need and its availability, shifting your rental by a day can sometimes make the project work.

Sunday can also be useful when you’d rather spend the day working at your own pace instead of trying to pick up a truck, complete the entire project and return it all within a busy Saturday schedule.

🌿 A Sunday Dump Truck Rental Can Work Particularly Well

Here’s a good example of how a Sunday rental can help.

Suppose you’re cleaning up a Santa Cruz yard. You have tree branches, leaves, brush or other material that needs to be loaded into a dump truck and taken to the City of Santa Cruz Resource Recovery Facility (“the dump”) on Dimeo Lane.

The dump is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 AM–3:30 PM, so you can’t make the actual dump run there on Sunday.

But that doesn’t mean Sunday is useless.

Instead, you can pick up the dump truck Sunday morning and spend Sunday cutting, cleaning and loading the truck. Then on Monday morning, head to the dump first thing, unload, refuel the truck and return it to us.

For some projects, that can actually be a pretty convenient schedule.

You get Sunday to concentrate on the work itself without having to stop midway through the project because you’re watching the clock for the dump.

A Couple of Local Dump-Run Tips

If you’ve made enough trips to the dump on Dimeo Lane, you learn a few things.

For an early trip, you can arrive before the 7:30 AM opening and get in line so you’re ready when they open.

At the other end of the day, we recommend planning to be in line at least 10–15 minutes before the 3:30 PM closing time rather than cutting it too close.

And don’t forget about your load.

Make sure it is properly covered before you head to the dump. An uncovered or improperly secured load can create problems before you ever get to unload.

A few minutes spent securing everything before you leave can save you a much bigger headache later.

🚚 Sunday Rentals Aren’t Just for Dump Runs

Of course, the same idea can apply to many other projects.

Maybe you’re moving furniture between homes in Santa Cruz County. Perhaps you’re clearing out a storage unit, picking up equipment, working on a landscaping project or preparing for a Monday delivery.

Depending on availability, you might use:

🚐 Cargo vans for smaller moves, deliveries and enclosed cargo
🚛 Box trucks for household or business moves
🛻 Pickups and flatbeds for materials and equipment
🌿 Dump trucks for cleanup and hauling projects
❄️ Refrigerated vehicles for temperature-sensitive loads

The important part is that you don’t necessarily need to know which vehicle you need before you call us.

Tell us what you’re trying to accomplish, what you’re hauling and when you need to do it. We can look at the available vehicles and help you narrow down your options.

Planning a Weekend Project in Santa Cruz?

If Friday or Saturday is your first choice, it’s always a good idea to reserve ahead when you can.

But if the vehicle you want isn’t available—or your schedule changes—don’t forget about Sunday.

Independent Rental Co. is open:

Saturday: 9 AM–12 PM
Sunday: 9 AM–12 PM

And depending on your reservation, an 8:30 AM pickup may be available by arrangement.

Sometimes changing the schedule by one day is all it takes to turn “there aren’t any trucks available” into a workable plan.

So give us a call and tell us about your project. We’ll see what we have available and help you figure out a rental schedule that makes sense.

🌧 Rain Reveals Box Truck Leaks—But Timing the Repair Matters

If you need box truck leak repair, rainy weather is actually one of the best times to identify the problem.

Real rain shows how water actually behaves—flowing along seams, roof edges, marker lights, rivets, and door frames before appearing somewhere completely different inside the box. The drip you see is often not where the leak actually starts.

That’s also why simulating rain with a hose doesn’t always work. It’s extremely difficult to recreate the exact angles, pressure, wind, and flow patterns of natural rainfall.

🔍 Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until Summer

Here’s the part most people miss:

👉 Don’t wait until the rainy season is over to fix it.

While repairs shouldn’t be done during active rain, the best time to diagnose and repair leaks is shortly after—when there are still visible clues like:

  • Damp areas
  • Water streaks
  • Soft spots
  • Puddling
  • Fresh staining

Once everything dries out, you’re often back to square one—trying to guess where the water came from.

We see this every year—customers wait until summer, and by then the trail is gone.

🛠 What Happens If You Ignore a Leak?

What starts as a small leak can turn into:

  • Cargo damage
  • Mold and mildew buildup
  • Rust and corrosion
  • Structural damage to the box

Fixing it early is always faster and less expensive.

This truck has a shifter. There are 2 modes: Automatic and manual. Automatic mode is the mode most people will choose to use. In manual mode you will need to shift. There is no clutch. Shifting is done by tapping the shifter up and down. Manual mode is mainly used by professional commercial drivers.

Exhaust brake for Mitsubishi canter Trucks

An orange light will appear and disappear in the upper left-hand side of the dashboard, above the speedometer as you drive. This is normal. ☺ The light comes on to let you know the exhaust brake is working. The exhaust brake helps to slow the truck down without riding the brakes.
